Rola Wala, Leeds Trinity: Indian street food with vegan options
Rola Wala is an Indian street food restaurant in Leeds Trinity, just next to Pho Vietnamese which I recently reviewed. I was interested to hear that Rola Wala, like Pho, has some good vegan options and so I headed along to check it out.
Rola Wala means ‘the man who rolls’ in Hindi, and the restaurant is so named because it specialises in naan rolls. I headed to the counter to order and was impressed that the helpful member of waiting staff was fully informed about the vegan options available.
You can order either a naan roll, or a hot bowl containing rice, both of which come with a couple of fillings and fresh chutneys and salad. The naan roll is vegan – Rola Wala apparently used to serve non-vegan rolls but changed their menu due to vegan demand! I ordered the hot bowl, which is a bed of cauliflower rice with two vegan fillings – keralan dal, a nine spice dal made from beetroot, coconut and channa dal, and roasted Mumbai gobi, which is made from roasted kale, sweet potato, cauliflower, green peas, garlic and spices. A bowl or wrap costs £5.95.
A selection of chutneys/sauces are on offer and as I like spicy food I went for chilli sauce, as well as some salad. The food was good – fresh, spicy and flavoursome – though the photo I took doesn’t really do it justice, as the tasty dal and gobi fillings are obscured by the salad. Next time I order the hot bowl I’ll probably ask for the salad on the side, rather than plonked on top of the curry.
I enjoyed the meal and will definitely go back to Rola Wala. Like the rest of Trinity Kitchen the restaurant’s interior decor is fantastic, and it’s great to have another place in the city centre where vegans can get something tasty and healthy to eat, quickly, and at a reasonable price.
Next time I go I’ll probably try Rola Wala’s naan roll, and I’ll also order a craft beer to wash it down – they have some good IPA’s on tap including Camden Pale, my beer of choice when I’m at the other nearby Indian street food bar, Bundobust.
