Pho is a Vietnamese restaurant near the entrance to Trinity Kitchen in the Trinity Centre, Leeds. It’s named after the Vietnamese national dish (which is pronounced ‘Fuh’) – a rice noodle soup which is served with a plate of fresh herbs. I heard they offer a number of vegan options so I went to check it out.

I was pleased to find out that Pho’s vegetarian options are vegan, as they do not contain dairy or egg – the noodles are rice-based and so vegan-friendly. Pho offers a range of soups, curries, and salads and being a fan of spicy food we ordered the Bún chay Huế (hot and spicy tofu and mushroom soup) and the tofu Cà-ri (curry with vegetables and mushrooms, served with nuts and broken rice). The soup was £6.45 and the curry £6.95.

Except Pho’s stock the food is freshly prepared, and you can watch the chefs busily preparing it in the open kitchen. Trinity Kitchen is a large and very modern space, with an industrial design. It’s a nice place to sit and wait as your food is being prepared – which didn’t take long, as it was ready in a matter of minutes.

The tofu and mushroom soup is huge and really tasty. It’s packed with tofu, mushrooms, spring onions and other vegetables. It’s served with a side plate of fresh herbs including mint, coriander and Thai basil, as well as bean sprouts, a piece of lime, and some very hot pieces of red chili. Spicy, fresh and flavoursome, I enjoyed the soup, though if you’re anything like me you’ll definitely need practice to eat it with chopsticks! The soup was enough for a meal as it was surprisingly filling.

The Cà-ri curry, with various vegetables, tofu, and nuts is also good – fresh, full of flavour and mildly spicy.

I’ll definitely go back to Pho. The food was good, reasonably priced and served quickly, and Trinity Kitchen is a nice place to eat. Plus, it’s good to have another evening option in Leeds for vegan food, as Pho is open until 9 pm Monday to Thursday, 9.30 pm on Friday and Saturday, and 6 pm on Sunday.
